Breaking the Mold

Cat Gifford

Updated: Sep 17, 2024

Ralph broke open the mold a couple of days ago. The first half came off beautifully, but the second was a bit of a bear. We think it's because Ralph had to use a different polyester resin for the second half and something in the chemistry of that brand of resin reacted oddly to the silicon which made it want to hold on to the mold being casted. I can't wait to see what's in store once he casts the sculpture from this new mold. Here is a process picture from this weekend of literally "breaking" the mold.

A sculpture being broken out of the a mold that did not get cast correctly.
Things don't always work the first time.
